Note that the creation of a fixed-size image can take a long time depending on the size of the image and the write performance of your hard disk. So, for a 10 GB disk, you will have a 10 GB file. Among other things I don't think that method would allow you to run both the "host" and "guest" off of the same installation at the same time. If you create a fixed-size image, an image file will be created on your host system which has roughly the same size as the virtual disk's capacity. However, I would not recommend doing this if you are new to the entire thing. Now, there is a way to get Virtualbox to run off an existing OS install, though I've only really seen this done for Windows guests ( ).
